The Spaniards in Nyborg in 1808

A Spanish Soldier 1808. Reproduced with permission from Koldinghus.

On 9 August 1808 there was a naval battle off Nyborg. The background was the Napoleonic Wars. In the summer of 1808 Denmark, having formed an alliance with Napoleon, had already been at war with Britain for a year. Spanish and French troops were sent north to conquer Sweden, an ally of Britain.
